Captain Vikram Batra, who gave his life for the sake of our country during the Kargil war in 1999 at an age of 24, belonged to Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He was born on 9th September, 1974. His primary education was done at home by his mother and later he went to D.A.V school Palampur for Middle Secondary Education and Central school, Palampur for Higher Secondary Education. He was a BSc. Graduate from DAV College, Chandigarh from where he received the Best NCC Cadet (Air wing) in two zones. Got selected in IMA Dehradun in year 1996 in Jessore Company of Manekshaw Battalion. He was nicknamed ‘Sher Shah’ by his fellows and was referred to as the same by his enemies as well. He was the one who brought the Indian Army to victory during the Kargil War wherein he died a brave death at a counterattack by the enemies. He was later awarded the ParamVir Chakra and is till date honored by having a number of landmarks named after him.
Subedar Major Vijay Kumar born on 19th August, 1985.He is a great Olympian from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh who won a silver medal in individual 25 meters rapid fire pistol event during the London Olympics 2012. He has received various awards at the sport of shooting. He is also serving as the Subedar Major in the Dogra Regiment of the Indian army.
Anupam Kher (Shimla), a senior actor of Bollywood, born on 7th March, 1955 in Shimla. He studied in D.A.V school, Shimla during his school years and later was a student of Himachal Pradesh University, where he performed a number of plays. After that he joined National School of Drama, where he also served as the Chairman when he got well established in the film industry. He has also remained as the head of the Censor board for Film Industry in India. Made his debut in Bollywood with his film ‘Aagman’ in 1982. He has worked in enumerable films in India and abroad and has received applause for the same. He received National Film Award twice and was also honored with Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.
Kangana Ranaut (Mandi) born in Bhambla village of district Mandi in Himachal Pradesh on 29th March, 1987. She completed her schooling from DAV school, Chandigarh after which she dropped the idea of becoming a doctor and went to Delhi where she started modelling. She made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Gangster’ in 2006. She has been awarded the National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards and is continuing to progress with her dynamic skills.
Mohit Chauhan (Nahan, Sirmour) is a playback singer from district Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh. Born on 11th March, 1996, he studied in St. Xavier’s school in Delhi and later came back to Himachal, where he completed his post-graduation in Geology from Himachal Pradesh University. He is a renowned playback singer. He was also the lead singer of ‘Silk Route’, a famous band from the Himalayas. He has received great appreciation throughout the country for his talent and also received two Filmfare Awards for his playback singing.
Preity Zinta (Shimla) was born on 31st January, 1975 in Rohru, Shimla. Completed her schooling from the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla and graduated from St. Bede’s College, Shimla. She made her debut in the film industry with her film ‘Dil Se’ in 1998. She is a social activist and has written on varied topics for BBC News Online. She is the co-owner of the IPL team Kings XI Punjab. She has also been awarded in the Chicago Film Festival and has acclaimed international popularity. Apart from two Filmfare Awards she has also been awarded with the Godfrey Phillips National Bravery Award in relation to the Bharat Shah Case in 2003.
Yami Gautam (Bilaspur), an upcoming Bollywood actress born on 28th November, 1988 in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. She was brought up in Chandigarh. Aspired to become an IAS officer but then diverted her aim towards acting. She had started studying law from Punjab University but gave up, giving her full attention to acting. She made her debut with ‘Ullasa Utasaha’, a Kannada film in 2010. With her recent hit, Vicky Donor, she has received an IIFA in 2013 for best female debut.
